These Western Cape cops were certainly not upholding the law when they engaged in these corrupt activities.
Crime is bad enough already in South Africa, we definitely don’t need our police officers getting in on the act. For some Western Cape cops, though, corruption pays far too well.
Western Cape cops caught for dodgy dealings
News24 reports that five police officers from the town of Vredenburg have been arrested on suspicion of multiple crimes. These include falsifying information as well as colluding to have drugs transported.
The officers are said to have committed the crimes while they were meant to be carrying out crime prevention operations.
Western Cape police spokesperson Captain Frederick Van Wyk confirmed to the publication on Wednesday that four of the officers have been suspended. The fifth has resigned.
All five were arrested on Tuesday following a detailed undercover operation that was carried out by crime intelligence officers and the Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit.
“The suspects are alleged to have committed illicit activities while deployed to perform court and crime prevention duties,” he said.
“It is further alleged the suspects were colluding with members of the public to carry out activities such as the transportation of drugs while on duty, taking bribes and falsifying information.”
At the start of August, four people had been arrested on fraud and corruption charges after the Hawks swooped in.
