The DA continued its decline in supporters in the Western Cape on a day when the ANC gained great success in inter-elections nationwide.
The ANC has taken two wards at the DA and one at the IVP, and it is especially among the rural brown voters that the DA now begins to feel its inability to manage the Patricia de Lille situation.
In Matzikama ward 6 (the area between Vanrhynsdorp and Klawer in Namaqualand), the ANC’s Mathilda Bains swept the ward away from the DA. She received 1 119 votes at 1 101 for the DA, 26 for the Khoisan Heavenly Party and 13 for the EFF. The turnaround against the DA since 2016 is 8%.
The municipality next door is Cederberg, and there was even more trouble with the DA. Ward 4 is the town of Graafwater in the Sandveld, and Pauluis Strauss (ANC) is the new councilor after pulling 1 001 votes at 754 for the DA, and so the DA ward has decreased comfortably. The ACDP has received 263 votes and the EFF 5. It’s a 25% swing against the DA.
There was better news for the party in blue from Saldanha Bay Ward 5, which encloses the village of Saldanha. There the DA’s Andre Truter received 991 votes against 86 for the Cape Party, 32 for the ANC and 5 for the EFF. It’s 4% better than the DA was in danger in 2016.
Elsewhere in the country, the ANC showed strong display.
The ANC has taken Mtubatuba ward 12 in rural Zululand with great ease at the IVP. Erick Ntuli (ANC) received 1 927 votes against the IVP’s 1 436, the UDM’s 27, the EFF’s 20, the NFP’s 16 and the ACDP’s 14 votes. It’s a 8% swing to the ANC.
At the Matiwan Shop area outside Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal, the ANC ward 23 retained in the Alfred Duma municipality, although they have lost 1% support to the IVP. Mongezi Nkephu (ANC) is the new councilor. He received 1 176 votes against the IVP’s 1 069, the NFP’s 70, the EFF’s 22 and Nadeco’s 9.
In Gauteng, the swindling of the ANC continued in Tshwane ward 19 (a part of Mabopane on the border with North West). Fanafuthi Hlatshwayo (ANC) received 2,064 votes at 716 for the EFF, 275 for the DA and 176 for the Arusha Economic Coalition. It’s a 16% swing against the ANC.
Two inter-elections took place in North West – both in the Ramotshere Moiloa municipality that settled in Zeerust.
Ward 4 is a rural area bordering Botswana. Thabo Modisane (ANC) received 957 votes at 235 for the EFF, 115 for an independent and 50 for the Forum 4 Service Delivery. The turn to the ANC since 2016 is 16%.
Ward 16 of that municipality is a small ward in Zeerust’s predominantly Indian neighborhood. Yousuf Suliman (ANC) is the new councilor with 455 votes, followed by the DA with 246, the EFF with 243 and an independent with 119. The turn to the ANC is 11%.
The last election was in Limpopo, in ward 10 of the Mogalakwena municipality, which is located in Mokopane (Potgietersrus). In a 26% swing to the ANC, Kgadile Majadibody (ANC) included the wards, which include the rural Madubung area, with 1 538 votes at 426 for the EFF, 72 for the PAC, 40 for Cope and 13 for the UDM.
